About Ruckus Games

We are an all new, independent studio on a mission to make games that inspire the next generation of gamers.

Job Description

We're looking for a Level Designer who will work closely with the Ruckus Games team to bridge the gap between Art and Design and help spearhead the innovative tools and processes of our unique creations from the ground up. Our ideal candidate is humble, demonstrates both the artistic and technical sides of the level design process, values teamwork, is autonomous, shows initiative and wants to work in a well-funded startup environment.

Ruckus Games is a fully distributed studio, which is our way of saying everyone is working from home. We meet in Discord every working day and roll up our sleeves to make the best game possible.

  • Work with the Ruckus Games team to understand and execute the holistic vision of the game
  • Coordinate with artists and designers to design and implement critical gameplay systems into Unreal Engine environments
  • Brainstorm with mission designers to craft compelling puzzles, encounters, events, pacing, flow and objectives up through and including implementation
  • Collaborate with engineers to innovate on new ways to optimize the level design workflows within the game engine
  • Maintain performance and stability over your domain for the duration of the project (optimal level scripting, draw calls, overdraw, etc)
  • Engage daily with environment artists to maintain building standards for props and architectural art kits
  • Engage with all members of the Ruckus Games team to maintain a strong circle of communication
  • Document design concepts to communicate a clear vision for collaborators
  • Be available daily for video communications with Ruckus Games team members

  • 5+ years of experience as a level designer / level artist in game development OR a significant contribution to at least one shipped title
  • Demonstrable experience in creating strong level layouts, puzzle mechanics, and combat scenarios
  • A great sense of space, scale, and overall understanding of general world building concepts
  • The ability to shepherd an environment from block out to level deco and final polish, all the while focusing on proper pacing and flow
  • Experience maintaining performance standards and level optimization
  • A passion for creating compelling experiences that excite players
  • An understanding that we can only succeed as a cohesive team and supporting each other is fundamental to that success

  • A background or fundamental understanding of scene composition and level art
  • Professional experience with the full development pipeline on a shipped Unreal Engine 4 game
  • Strong understanding of how to best utilize visual scripting (Blueprints) within Unreal Engine 4
  • Comfortable using 3D modeling packages such as Blender, Maya, Modo or 3DS Max

  • Work from home (anywhere in the US)!
  • Flexible hours – 32 hour a week minimum / 50 hour maximum
  • 3 weeks vacation each year, in addition to paid holidays and sick days
  • Competitive healthcare plans including medical, dental, and vision
  • Life insurance plus short and long-term disability
  • 401K with 100% matching up to 4% of your salary
  • Employee stock options
  • Flexible Spending Accounts
